It’s not very often that one gets to experience a special Viking Ocean Cruises itinerary with the chairman and CEO of the company along for the ride, but that’s just what I had the wonderful opportunity to do, sailing on the line’s new Viking Sea on its “Into the Midnight Sun” voyage.

Speaking with the aforementioned chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen about what sets Viking apart in Norway, he said, “... We have the ‘Into the Midnight Sun,’ which I think is not too dissimilar from other people who are doing similar itineraries, but of course compared to Hurtigruten we are much more in port and we are much more comfortable. So, I think as we develop the shore excursion program, which we will figure out a little bit better, then I think this is very, very popular.
“The first one we had is the ‘Viking Homelands,’ which goes from Bergen into the fjords, down to Denmark, across to the Baltic and then stop(s) through St. Petersburg to Stockholm. There we manage to combine the Norwegian fjords with the Baltic which I think we’re the only one that does if I’m not mistaken. So, you get the best of both worlds on that one, but the ‘Midnight Sun’ is for the connoisseurs. And hopefully they’ll have some of the Norwegian feeling when they’re onboard too.”

Of course, to get a sense for what such an experience is truly like, visuals really tell the story, particularly in video, as I captured during the cruise. The footage, available to watch in 4K Ultra HD, is embedded below as hosted at my Popular Cruising YouTube channel.
