Windstar Cruises, which is about to expand to a six-ship fleet, hired a new sales vice president and named a travel agent as godmother of its new Star Legend.
Steven Simao, a 20-year cruise industry veteran based in Seattle, was named vice president of travel agency sales. Most recently, he was director of international sales at Holland America Line and Seabourn and before that was director of sales for Holland America's Western division when it was named Sales Division of the Year in each of his last four years.
Meanwhile, Gloria Bohan, CEO of Omega World Travel, was named godmother of the Star Legend when it is christened May 25 in Rome. The Star Legend will complete Windstar's ambitious expansion plan, which doubled its fleet from three sailing ships to six ships with three former "power yachts" purchased from Seabourn.
"This is a big year for us," Joe Duckett, Windstar vice president of marketing and sales announced at CLIA's cruise3sixty conference. "In just a few weeks, we'll complete a two-year mission to double the size of our fleet from three to six ships. We're also very pleased that for the first time in our history we were recognized as the world's best small-ship cruise line. ... As we double our capacity, we are more reliant on our trade partners than ever before."
And that led to the decision to honor the travel agent community by naming a retailer as godmother. "This is really a privilege," Bohan said. "Thank you so much for highlighting the work travel agents do. I'm now in my 43rd year running a travel business."
Windstar also is christening the Star Breeze on May 6 in Nice, France, with travel industry ambassador Wendy Perrin as godmother.
Duckett also announced a new contest that will award four travel agents a VIP trip to Hollywood to attend the 2015 Emmy Awards ceremony the weekend of Sept. 20. The trip will go to four travel agents who generate the most bookings on the three all-suite power yachts -- Star Pride, Star Breeze and Star Legend -- between April 23 and July 31.
The prize includes two tickets to the Emmy gala and pre-show, two nights at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, dinner for two on Saturday and Sunday night, transfers between airport, hotel and ceremony, and complimentary air credit from a Windstar gateway.
