One of the greatest arts festivals in the nation, Spoleto Festival U.S.A., is getting a new home for its 17-day run next spring. The festival, which includes performances in opera, theater, and dance, as well as chamber, symphonic, choral and jazz music, takes place throughout the city of Charleston, South Carolina. Historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces are taken over by both emerging and established artists. Next year, they will be able to add another venue to the list with the opening of the Gaillard Center Performance Hall.
On Oct. 18th, 2015, the performance hall's inaugural season will begin with a gala featuring Yo-Yo Ma and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. The season continues with first performances of themed series at the venue: The Masterworks Series highlights such talent as the Vienna Boys’ Choir, The Broadway Series includes a new production of “Saturday Night Fever,” and a Dance Series will stage “Moves” from the New York City Ballet and “The Nutcracker” from the Charlotte Ballet.
Officially named the Martha and John Rivers Performance Hall, it was constructed in the tradition of Europe’s great concert halls with the highest acoustic standards. It seats 1,800 patrons on four different levels and has an attached 16,000-square-foot exhibition space. The center plans to add performances in comedy, opera, country, R&B, jazz and more as the season continues.
Jennifer Scott, director of marketing and public relations for Spoleto Festival U.S.A. happily confirmed the Gaillard's participation in next years festival saying, "We look forward to returning to the newly renovated Gaillard Performance Hall and presenting a range of performances in the new space as part of our 40th season."
Spoleto Festival USA will take place May 27 through June 12, 2016 in Charleston, SC. The season will be announced in January 2016.
