A Curacao-based company has announced plans to open a 177-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel in 2017. CMC Real Estate N.V. will develop the hotel, the company said in a statement, as part of a mixed-use development featuring condominiums, retail space, an entertainment area, three restaurants and a casino.

Located in the Rif area of Curacao’s Otrobanda historic district, the hotel will target leisure and business travelers. Construction of the mixed-use development, to be named Mega Pier Plaza, will start in the second half of this year, with a “soft opening” scheduled for the first quarter of 2017. Once completed, the Courtyard by Marriott Curacao Hotel and Mega Pier Plaza will employ approximately 250 people directly and indirectly through the different commercial activities performed from its location.

The hotel will feature a “business lobby” common to Courtyard by Marriott properties, and also include a lobby bar, coffee shop, outdoor pool and terrace, fitness center and meeting space. Guest rooms will feature “intuitive” design with “spaces that enable technology,” according to CMC officials.

“The new hotel in Curaçao will be a significant milestone in our rapid expansion across the Caribbean,” said Laurent de Kousemaeker, Chief Development Officer, Caribbean & Latin America, Marriott International.

The Mega Pier Plaza project is being funded by local investors including Gold Investment Curacao N.V., Vidanova Pension Fund and Foundation Pension Fund Isla Curacao, plus international hotel and casino developers and operators including U.S.-based Interamerican Promo Hotels and BE Boulevard of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The project has been in development for four years, according to CMC officials, “in order to procure a proper execution of all the necessary steps related to such a development.”

“The cooperation received from the government of Curacao, the different ministers, as well as the different government departments has enabled CMC Real Estate to achieve the addition of an international hotel brand to the island’s touristic and business product,” officials added.
