Looking to discover the Golden State's stunning national parks and white-sand beaches but want to feel like you are the only one around? There are a number of spots that still manage to fly under the radar.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

You may have heard of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park already. It was ground zero for California's legendary wildflower bloom that officially ushered in a new, drought free era to the state.

However, the area has other claims to fame, including beautiful hiking trails and killer camping.

It's also so far away from everything that you can actually see the stars. Anza-Borrego was recognized as the first International Dark Sky Community in California-so be ready to stay up late and catch a shooting star.

Big Bear Lake

You don't have to head all the way up to the Sierras to take advantage of California's legendary mountain life. You just enjoy a short three-hour drive from Los Angeles.

In fact, one of Big Bear Lake's biggest claims to fame is that it allows Californians the ultimate opportunity: ski and surf in the same day. If you plan your journey right, you can make it from Huntington Beach to Big Bear Mountain Resort, skiing in the morning and surfing in the afternoon (or vice versa).

It's also well-known for its stunning lake, with summer activities that include boating, standup paddle boarding waterskiing and more. The area offers mountain biking, hiking and off-road adventures for year-long fun.

Gilroy Gardens

You don't have to travel all the way to Disneyland to have an amazing theme park experience. Gilroy Gardens is a thrilling stop on a classic California Coastal road trip-ideal for those looking to escape the crowds at some of the region's more bustling amusement park attractions.

There are a variety of rides, from the Sky Trail monorail and Rainbow Garden Round Boat Ride to the Quicksilver Express Mine Coaster. This is not the place for the extreme thrill seeker but is definitely a park for an enjoyable day of wholesome family fun.

Sierra Vista Scenic Byway

Traveling along the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway is definitely going to be a worthy summer activity. While snowed in during the wintertime, the drive blooms into an ideal day trip during the spring and through the summer and the fall.

It's really all about the Mile High Vista Lookout, and there are a number of tours that take visitors there.

Try the Stars on the Scenic Byway for an evening of stargazing. Visitors can join a carpool to the Mile High Vista, and experts will be on hand to point out constellations and a 360-degree view of the night sky.

Mount Lassen

For fans of mountaineering, climbing and hiking, Mount Lassen may already be on your radar. The towering volcano is a reminder of the region's origins and remains an active threat to this day.

However, its beauty cannot be denied. With Lassen as its centerpiece, the region of Redding is a recreational paradise, offering thermal hot springs, waterfalls, beaches, boating, paddling and more.
