Those who have been know just how magical and life-changing a trip to Disney parks can be. But a new worldwide rankings proves just how dominant and ahead of the pack the Mouse crew are.
A new ranking from the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM global attractions attendance report has named the top 25 theme parks in the world.
According to the TEA’s official list, the biggest winner was Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide, Inc., who boasted an astounding 11 of the top 25 parks in the world and nine of the top 10 spots on the list.
The list pertains to the success of the parks for the 2014 calendar year, and the No. 1 ranked park in the world was The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. With over 19.3 million guests last year, the park saw two million more people than the No. 2 attraction on the list, Tokyo Disneyland.
The rest of the top five shook out with Disneyland (16.7 million visitors) in Anaheim, California coming in third overall, Japan’s Tokyo DisneySea (14.1 million visitors) finishing in fourth place and Universal Studios Japan (11.8 million visitors) rounding out the top five.
While the dominance of Disney is newsworthy, the amusement park industry as a whole is growing internationally, with 223 million visits to the top 25 theme parks in 2014, an increase of 4.1 percent from the previous year.
The business of amusement parks has grown beyond the top 25 list as well.
Last year, there were 138 million visits to the top 20 North American theme parks (a 2.2 percent increase,) 122.5 million visits to the top 20 Asian theme parks (a 4.9 percent increase) and 59.5 million visits to parks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (a three percent increase.)
In addition to ranking theme parks, the TEA also ranked the top water parks and museums in the world, but also offers an extensive guide to each region of the world, breaking down the best in each area.
Before you plan your next vacation, check the recent rankings to see where your theme park destination stacks up against the rest of the world.
