No matter your position on the election, it's over. Donald J. Trump will officially be the 45th President of the United States of America. There is one place that will see a lot more of Mr. Trump in the future, and it’s going to be while you are on vacation. That's right, Donald Trump is going to Walt Disney World.
The Hall of Presidents has a time-honored tradition of adding every single United States President. Disney’s audio animatronics bring presidents, both past and present to life in a living history lesson. Now, president-elect Donald Trump has the option to become part of this historic attraction. Beginning in 2017, Disney Imagineers will bring the newest portion of the attraction to life.
The attraction started in 1971, and opened as part of the Liberty Square section of the park. The Hall of Presidents was the follow-up to the hugely successful “Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln.” The original name was to be “One Nation Under God” and was going to include an ever-growing number of wax figures representing each president. After the success of Mr. Lincoln at Disneyland, Imagineers decided to go with the animatronic figures instead, thus the Hall of Presidents was born.
Each time a new president is elected, the team at Disney goes to work to measure and sculpt the new President. Every look is done to precise measurements, and the appearance of most of the Presidents are spot on. While every single President is represented, not everyone speaks. The most that the majority of President animatronics do is nod their heads during role call. The big exception to this is President Obama. Obama marks the first time in attraction history that a President has recorded an original speech specifically for the attraction.
While the attraction has undergone a few changes, the biggest has been over the last year to the outside of the building. The outer building now features a show featuring The Muppets and their “Great Moments in American History.” Kermit, Miss Piggy, Sam the Eagle and others recreate moments from history above the Hall of Presidents several times daily. It's a hilarious take on American history, and it brings our favorite Muppet characters out into a unique new setting. It's definitely a must-see attraction while at Magic Kingdom.
As for President Trump, there is no indication of what role he will play when his figure is added to the attraction. While it's possible he could record a new speech for the show, it's likely that he will stay quiet, which has been uncharacteristic of him so far. The show will go down for refurbishment beginning on Jan. 17 and will reopen on June 30 2017, and will likely feature the new president.
Until then, guests will still be able to get their dose of American History with “The Muppets Present-Great Moments in American History” outside of the attraction.
