If you love travel, art or just some darn fine examples of design’s past, then take note of an upcoming eBay auction.

Rare & Important Travel Posters is being held on eBay and is offered by Swann Auction Galleries out of New York.

The auction will take place Oct. 27, putting on display some remarkably designed travel posters that absolutely take you back in time to a genteel era.

There are currently over 220 lots ranging from vibrant ads for various ocean liners to brilliantly colored destination campaign posters.

The above is entitled Prince’s Highway Tour and is estimated at $600-$900. It was designed by Percy Trompf who was commemorating a journey that was previously dedicated to royalty.

Each poster comes with its own descriptor and oftentimes a history lesson. In this case, the caption for the above image reads: “This road was named 'Princes Highway' to commemorate the Prince of Wales' (later King Edward VIII) visit to Australia. The intent was for him to make an overland trip from Melbourne to Sydney using this route, but ultimately this plan was abandoned because the road would not have been constructed to his standards in time.”

This gorgeous poster is entitled Marseille, by Roger Broders, and it depicts a wonderful scene teeming with luxurious liners.

This lot, however, will cost one lucky enthusiast a handsome sum. It’s estimated to go for $6,000 or higher.

The descriptor notes: “This geometrically appealing image manages to convey the hustle and bustle of the harbor, yet it creates a stylized order out of the chaos.”

One of the more expensive lots is this poster from Emil Cardinaux for the Palace Hotel in St. Moritz.

This lovely scene is going to hit the $12,000 mark and may very well go to about $18,000, according to the seller’s estimate.

We will let the experts explain: “One of two posters Cardinaux designed for the famous resort hotel; this one shows lounging winter guests, while the other, a summer scene, depicts golfers. In both, employing casual grace and compelling composition, Cardinaux depicts tableaux in his simple, bold style. This poster captures a specific attitude, incorporating mood, style and fashion, to reflect the lifestyle of the hotel's clientele.”

If you don’t plan on throwing thousands of dollars at something that will hang on your wall for decades you should still certainly head over to the auction and browse through some historic and captivating images.

What worked to drive tourism decades ago most certainly works today.
