Egypt’s new minister of tourism, Khaled Rami, set up a committee to oversee the development of green tourism in Egypt.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism: “The aim of this committee is to put into action the ministry’s future vision for developing this kind of tourism in Egypt, confront the regional and international challenges facing it and upgrade its competitiveness in addition to the [environmental] protection. The objective is to promote such ... tourism fulfilling one of the state’s priorities regarding achieving sustainable development and energy saving.”

The committee will provide information about sustainable tourism to officials in government as well as to hotels and other relevant stakeholders. Beyond that, it will pursue an agenda that will include the following points.

  • The committee will participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops on sustainable tourism.
  • It will initiate green tourism projects in collaboration with public and private entities.
  • The committee will help to coordinate the efforts of private and public organizations.
  • It will provide legal advice as well as technical and administrative counseling to those interested in pursuing projects related to sustainable tourism.
