On Thursday, Expedia released the results of the 2016 Spring Break trends analysis for average airline ticket prices to many of the top vacation destinations.

As travelers in the United States prepare for Spring break, falling ticket prices should make traveling by air a more attractive option than in years' past. The top five most popular destinations in the United States have seen a drop in price over this time last year, including Fort Lauderdale flights being 17 percent cheaper and Orlando and Miami flights each being 14 percent cheaper.

Internationally, travelers should expect the biggest savings on trips to San Juan and Cancun, which are 15 and 14 percent cheaper, respectively, than this time last year. Puerto Vallarta and Punta Cana are also options at 10 and six percent savings, respectively, but prices in San Jose del Cabo have actually increased by one percent.

For travelers looking for cheap prices to destinations not typically associated with Spring Break, Lake Tahoe is averaging 110 percent cheaper than last year, while Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; and Orange County, California, are all between 30- and 35-percent cheaper.

Families looking to visit big cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington, D.C., should also expect to find savings between 8 and 18 percent over 2015's airline ticket prices.

Expedia travel expert Sarah Gavin released a statement about the Spring Break trends:

"There are any number of factors that impact Spring Break pricing - the price of oil, demand, weather, you name it. The good news is that all of these factors, collectively, seem to be pushing prices down. There are good deals to be had. And better deals to be had to major US cities, Hawaii and internationally if you take one simple step: book your hotel and your flight at the exact same time. Bundling your hotel and flight can yield hundreds in savings that disappear if booked separately."
