Expedia Reveals Top 2015 Labor Day Destinations
With a majority of Americans often waiting until the last minute to book a Labor Day trip, Expedia has unveiled a list of the top destinations for the unofficial end of summer.
Expedia revealed that 2014 Labor Day booking data showed that only 20 percent of eventual holiday accommodations had been booked by July 2014. In response, the full-service travel website has released a list of the top 10 North American destinations for the first weekend in September based on flight booking data.
Here's a look at the complete list:
1. Las Vegas
2. New York
3. Cancun, Mexico
4. Orlando, Florida
6. Los Angeles
7. San Francisco
Expedia found that average flight prices to six of the 10 destinations have decreased notably this summer compared to last. For example, average airfares for flights to Cancun and Miami are down by more than 10 percent.
Based on Expedia's data, average prices on flights to Los Angeles and Washington are down nine percent, while average prices on flights to New York and Orlando are down seven percent and five percent respectively.
However destinations offering the biggest savings for travelers include Toronto, Mexico City and Cleveland, where the average flight prices have dropped 27 percent, 25 percent and 22 percent respectively in 2015 compared to 2014.
Meanwhile, Labor Day travelers looking to celebrate the holiday overseas will not only benefit from declining hotel rates, but from favorable currency exchange rates. Expedia found that average daily hotel rates in Barcelona are down more than 20 percent, while rates in Florence, Italy have dropped by more than five percent.
"The favorable exchange rates we've seen this summer are a welcome relief for travelers looking to experience Europe," said Expedia senior editor Ingrid Belobradic in a statement. "Coupled with the already great promotions available, we're seeing opportunities for strong savings this Labor Day across international and domestic destinations."
