Five Musts To Do In Guanajuato

Guanajuato has been named by many travelers as one of the most beautiful locations in all of Mexico, and it’s easy to see why.

The city boasts an eclectic yet visually stunning assortment of settings that would serve as the ideal picture-perfect backdrop for a travel postcard. The rolling hills are dotted with brightly-colored buildings and charming homes, providing an eye-catching view from anywhere in the vicinity.

The city offers so much to do that it can be tough to figure out which you should choose first. Here are five activities we suggest.

Explore the colorful and surprising landscapes

One of the most striking features of Guanajuato is the city’s interesting layout, and the fact that it consists of a mix of winding hills, cobblestone alleys, hidden staircases and other surprises that can often make the area seem like a puzzle made up of all sorts of random pieces that somehow all fit together perfectly. Tourists often enjoy exploring the terrain without any set destination. It can be easy to get lost, but the general rule is that if you just head downhill, you will usually end up in the main part of town.

View the architecture

While you are wandering around the city, take advantage of the opportunity to get a close-up look at some of the stunning local architecture. The town is said to have some of the most perfect examples of Baroque architecture around, and you can see many example of the buildings that played a vital role in the city’s history as a silver mine operation.

Get some culture

This is the perfect place to learn about art and history, as it is all around you in Guanajuato. You can get both in one place when you visit the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, a former grain storage building that now serves as a museum for art and history.  There are also several renowned theaters scattered throughout town.

Sample some delicious eats

No matter what type of cuisine your taste buds crave, you should be able to find something to cure your hunger pains without going too far. There are many street vendors offering homemade treats—check out some of the local street fair tours for help finding them—or you can get a variety of flavor-packed foods at one of the many local markets. Be sure to grab the chance to enjoy a cup of authentic Mexican coffee!

Hop on the Funicular

One of the best ways to truly appreciate the spectacular view of the city is by viewing it from the unique vantage point of the Funicular. This inclined railway provides you with a way to climb the sides of the mountains, offering you an incredible spot from which to enjoy the vast landscape all around you.
