Curbed Ski is reporting today that Vail Resorts Management has gotten the go ahead for a plan to create the largest ski resort in the United States. The plan, which calls for a $50 million upgrade to Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort which they recently acquired in September, is set to start soon and be ready for the 2015-2016 ski season.

The plan will, in essence, turn two wildly successful ski resorts into one mega-resort, the largest of its kind in the entire country.

"This comprehensive capital plan for Park City and Canyons is one of the most ambitious and impactful plans undertaken at any resort in industry history, transforming the experience at both resorts and creating the largest single ski resort in the U.S. with more than 7,300 acres of skiable terrain," said Blaise Carrig, president of the mountain division for Vail Resorts. He added, "The improvements offer skiers and riders more terrain and upgraded lifts to enhance the guest experience and reduce crowding and lift lines, new and upgraded restaurants, more snowmaking and an overall ‘touching up’ of all aspects of the resorts.“

Some of the planned enhancements are an eight-passenger two-way Interconnect Gondola, which will connect the Silverlode Lift at Park City to the Flatiron Lift at Canyons; upgrades to the King Con and Motherlode Lifts at Park City; two restaurant upgrades and addition of a third; as well as improvements to snowmaking on the mountain and $5 million in catch up maintenance. The plan was based on feedback from guests and the local community as well as discussions with the senior operating teams at the two resorts. This plan would give the skiing public approximately 7,300 skiable acres to explore.

The company intends to operate the two resorts as one brand under the name "Park City Mountain Resort.”  Because of the difference in their history and atmosphere, the hotel experiences at each resort will be separately marketed.
