London's Amazing Sightlines Are No Accident

Chances are you had no idea that London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral gets something of a royal treatment as pertains to its already resplendent views.

YouTube’s Tom Scott returns to explain why despite the city’s ongoing construction you can pretty much always get a nifty view of the iconic structure, among other buildings.

And this lesson is none more prevalent to where Scott shot some of this video, namely the New London Model, which is presented at the New London Architecture at the Building Centre in London.

However the brief video doesn’t really resonate powerfully until you hear about Richmond Park and the view some of us are just now hearing exists:

A video that starts with a 1:2000-scale model of London evolves into an explanation on why certain buildings adopted odd architecture.

Certainly a great deal of this is to add to an already eclectic skyline that ranks among the most breathtaking in the world.

But Scott explains that other things are at work, including the city’s mandate that various sightlines and vantages be protected from the glass and concrete weeds that normally cover a metropolis.

It’s this reason that yields some interesting architecture around the area and why you can still admire St. Paul’s from a remarkable 10 miles away.

The town gets a great deal right, including its dedication to preserving a touch of its past amid an ongoing and promising look to the future.
