While it’s always surf season in Los Cabos, June is an especially “swell” time to catch professional surfing action in the Baja destination. From June 7-12, wave riders from across the globe will gather at Zippers Beach for the fourth annual Los Cabos Open of Surf. The largest surf festival in Mexico and Latin America, the event also elevates the surf culture vibe with music and a Friday night concert.
Premiering as an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Men’s event in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf expanded in 2014 to become the first Women’s ASP 6-Star competition in Mexico. In 2015, the Open upped the ante once again by becoming a World Surfing League (WSL) Women’s QS6000 event, as well as a WSL Men’s and Women’s Pro Junior event.
"We're super excited to have the best juniors in the world coming to Los Cabos to compete," said Chris Cote, communications director and cultural ambassador for the Los Cabos Open of Surf. "Adding Pro Juniors to the QS6000 Women's event in 2015 gave the spectators a really cool look at the future of our sport, and is the perfect complement to the Women's QS, an event that will spotlight the world's best women surfers at a break that is perfect to showcase high performance surfing.”

Produced and promoted by Boardwalk Mx, the Los Cabos event is sanctioned by the WSL with sponsorship by the Los Cabos Tourism Board (LCTB). Luis Palacios, LCTB’s commercial director, noted in a released statement, “We are thrilled to once again host this exciting event attracting surf aficionados and families alike to Los Cabos. Every year, the festival is growing and aims to attract visitors with interests not just in surf but art, authentic cuisine, music and more.”

Close to the Action
While Zippers is coveted for its fast waves geared to the more advanced surfer, The Rock is best for intermediate surfers and Acapulquito (Old Man’s) Beach is recommended for beginners or long boarders.
For your clients wanting to stay close to the action, the 36-room boutique Cabo Surf Hotel & Spa is located on the latter and near all the action of the Los Cabos Open of Surf. But with its proximity and prime perch on an ocean cove and sandy beach with rock formations and light jade green waters, the hotel books up quickly.
Resembling a California-style beach house with white stucco walls, arches and red tile roofs, Cabo Surf Hotel is also home to 7 Seas Seafood Grille, Sea Spa Cabo and Mike Doyle Surf School that offers private lessons as well as three-day clinics on uncrowded, long-ride waves. Hotel guests enjoy clinic discounts.
Nightly rack rates range from $265 for a Garden Double and $350 for an Ocean Double to $625 for an Ocean Master, sleeping six. Taxes and a $9USD service charge ($18USD in the Ocean Master category) are added for each night of stay.
Ocean Doubles are furnished with a queen sofa bed, kitchenette and Jacuzzi tub. Each Ocean King features a king sofa bed, kitchenette and Jacuzzi tub, while Garden Deluxe rooms provide a twin sofa bed and kitchenette.
The Agent’s Edge
If your clients are set on the Los Cabos Open of Surf’s timing but prefer being a bit removed from the buzz, consider other resorts located along “The Corridor” linking Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Among these are One&Only Palmilla, Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort, Las Ventanas al Paraiso Rosewood Hotel and Dreams Los Cabos.
Since many properties sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Odile in 2014, they have reopened with fresh concepts and extensive upgrades.
Aside from surf, golf also dominates the area. Recommend to your clients that you book their tee times before they arrive since Los Cabos golf is considered a hot ticket. Among those designed by the sport’s luminaries are Palmilla, Querencia, Club Campestre, Punta Sur, El Dorado and Cabo Real.
