After being purchased by developer Discover Land Company, it was revealed that Makena Beach & Golf Resort would transform from a resort property into a private club with luxury condominiums. The transformation has begun to take place, and the resort announced its official closure date of July 1 at the end of last month.

It comes as a blow to employees of the property, many of whom have worked at the resort for more than 20 years.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) reached out to workers at the resort with a message of support.

“This is heartbreaking news for the loyal employees at Makena Beach & Golf Resort,” said George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the HTA. “HTA is committed to supporting programs that help the 385 employees being laid off to find new jobs. Our contractors, the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau, are already leading efforts on the tourism industry’s behalf to develop a strategy that finds new job opportunities. We encourage other businesses on Maui and throughout the state to support initiatives being created for the sake of these Makena Resort employees and their families.”

This is bad news for residents on Maui who are also bearing the brunt of another business closure. The state’s last remaining sugar plantation announced its closure, displacing more than 700 workers. With the announcement that Makena Resort will also close, there will be a lot of competition in the Maui jobs market.

On a brighter side, the Mayor's Office of Economic Development reported that there are more than 1,200 hotel rooms and timeshare units opening up over the next 24 months, all of which will need staff. In addition, Makena plans to begin rehiring hospitality workers again in 30 months or so, according to local news site Maui Now.

Makena Beach Resort will be reborn as a private golf club. On the club’s website, it says that the Makena Golf & Beach Club will offer a “one-of-a-kind heirloom community” that will include 50 luxury oceanfront condominium estates, an adjacent Beach Club, luxury hillside villas, beach cottages and oceanfront condominiums residences that are centrally located to club and community amenities, custom home sites with ocean views, 24-hour security, on-call concierge, a neighborhood patrol, home care and maintenance programs.
