This week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made a pair of pivotal announcements regarding the state's future as a tourist destination in celebration of Earth Week.
It started on Monday, when Cuomo announced that $1.8 million in Conservation Partnership Program grants would be awarded to more than four dozen nonprofit land trusts across the Empire State.
"New York’s natural resources play a vital role in our economy, and today we are taking another step forward in protecting and preserving them for generations to come," said Cuomo in a statement. "With these grants, New York’s Environmental Protection Fund is securing critical funding for environmental and open space programs that will continue to protect our environment, generate jobs and revenue in local communities and ensure a cleaner and healthier New York."
The grants are funded through the Environmental Protection Fund, which will help produce an additional $1.7 million in private and local funding aimed at supporting a wide array of conservation and enhancement projects designed to benefit tourism and economic development within the region.
According to a recent study by the Trust for Public Land cited by the state's official website, every $1 New York’s Environmental Protection Fund invests generates $7 in total economic benefits from tourism, reduced government costs and public health.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Cuomo announced nearly $72 million in upcoming projects at 60 parks and historic sites across New York.
"New York is home to some of the top outdoor recreational and historic sites in the world and it is critical that we safeguard them for generations to come," said Cuomo in a statement. "With this funding, we are building on our past success in improving the infrastructure of our state parks and developing them into economic engines for local communities."
Altogether, there are nearly 90 rehabilitation and revitalization projects planned for 2015-16.
