It’s clear that President Obama is a fan of our country’s natural landscapes. In February of this year, Obama designated three national monuments in California – Mojave Trails National Monument, Sand to Snow National Monument, and Castle Mountains National Monument. He has also visited the Kenjai Fjords in Alaska, Yellowstone and Everglades national parks.

"Our country is home to some of the most beautiful God-given landscapes in the world,” he said. “We’re blessed with natural treasures – from the Grand Tetons to the Grand Canyon; from lush forests and vast deserts to lakes and rivers teeming with wildlife. And it’s our responsibility to protect these treasures for future generations, just as previous generations protected them for us."

Now, the first family will participate in the great American tradition of the road trip, visiting two national parks – Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico and Yosemite National Park in California on a three-day journey, over Father’s Day weekend. So if you happen to be heading to one of these places between June 17-19, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the Obamas, along the way (the presidential motorcade is pretty easy to spot).

“I want to make sure that the whole world is able to pass on to future generations the God-given beauty of this planet,” said the President on the White House’s Facebook page.

The president has long been an advocate for preserving our nation’s natural spaces. He is the president who has conserved the most land and water in the history of our nation and he has chosen a perfect time to visit these parks, during the National Parks Service’s centennial year.

For their part, the Parks Service is welcoming the Obamas.

"One of the best ways to find your voice for our national parks is to get out there and visit them — fall in love with them — and when they need you — to speak up for them so they are protected for present and future generations," was the Service’s comment to the President’s announcement on Facebook that the family would be visiting the parks.
