TripAdvisor announced the 2015 Travelers' Choice award winners Wednesday, and Oceanario de Lisboa in Portugal was named the best aquarium to visit in the world.
The rankings were based on TripAdvisor going through guest reviews, and Oceanario de Lisboa earned the top spot on the list by having 9,972 excellent or very good reviews out of 10,708 total.
While the Oceanario de Lisboa opened fairly recently, in 1998, the building has built up quite a varied number of sea creature species, and the aquarium has a focus on teaching people about the animals and how to protect them.
The next two aquariums on the list are both found in the United States. The No. 2 ranked facility is the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, followed by the third-ranked Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California.
The fourth-best aquarium in the world is located in Spain. Oceanografic can be found in Valencia, and is housed in a beautiful building filled with wonderful sea life from around the world.
Rounding out the top five is Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. While Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies doesn't get the mainstream buzz some of the other aquariums on this list do, this is one of the more family-friendly facilities near the top spot, and a great place for children to learn the wonders of the sea.
