South African Tourism (SAT), in coordination with the South African Consulate General in New York City, is celebrating the birth of Nelson Mandela with a series of volunteer opportunities in New York City during the month of July.

The celebration of Mandela is coordinated with Mandela Day, July 18.

Mandela will be commemorated with a schedule of events created in the spirit of Mandela’s leadership in inspiring community service and initiatives for positive change.

Mandela Day was established for observation of Mandela’s legacy on his birthday, July 18, and was recognized in a declaration by the United Nations General Assembly.

South African Tourism will promote awareness of the events through its online and social media channels using hashtags #MandelaDay and #Time2Serve.

SAT will begin the events with a series of video quizzes on the Visit South Africa Facebook page about the principle sites in South Africa associated with major points on the lifeline of Mandela as compiled on the Madiba’s Journey mobile app recently introduced by South African Tourism.

The Madiba’s Journey App can be downloaded through the South African Tourism website.

SAT also mounted a separate Hot Travel Deals landing page on its website to promote travel packages based on the life of Mandela.

The calendar of Mandela-themed events includes the following:

Monday, July 20: Pitch-in and Clean-Up Park Volunteer Program, Belvedere Castle at Central Park (Mid-Park at 79th St.) and North Meadow Recreation at Central Park (Mid-Park at 97th St.).

Friday, July 24: International Mandela Day Community Service Expo, Boys and Girls High School (1700 Fulton St., Brooklyn).
