Surf City USA to Host Guinness World Record Attempts
For many fans of the beach, the summer is all about hitting the open waves of the ocean on a surfboard. If you love surfing and can make it out to Huntington Beach, California, on June 20, there will be two attempts at setting new Guinness World Records.
According to SurfCityUSA.com, Huntington Beach—known worldwide as Surf City USA—is holding an event at the city pier on June 20 between 9 a.m. and noon local time to set new records for "World's Largest Surfboard" and "Most People Riding a Surfboard at Once."
In addition to the official Guinness World Records judge that will be in attendance, over 60 of the top professional surfers in history, celebrities and thousands of fans will line the beach as Surf City USA lives up to its name.
To achieve the world records, the event sponsored by retail giant Hurley and the city of Huntington Beach will need the largest surfboard in the world. Designed with the help of Orange County boat builder Westerly Marine and Rhode Island's mouldCAM, the board measures just over 42 feet long, more than 11 feet wide and 16 inches thick.
Huntington Beach’s official Twitter account shared an image of the huge board in two pieces:
The first-ever World Surfing champion and Huntington Beach resident, Peter "PT" Townend, released a statement about the city playing host to the Guinness World Record attempts:
“It's appropriate that the world's largest surfboard – and the record for most people surfing on that board – would reside here in Surf City USA. With the International Surfing Museum, the Surfing Walk of Fame and the Surfer's Hall of Fame, along with the world's biggest spectator surf contest, the US Open of Surfing, Huntington Beach is where surf culture happens.”
Once the city has set the world records, they will be put on display at the International Surfing Museum in downtown Huntington Beach. The hope from curators is that the giant surfboard will become an attraction and draw visitors to the area.
For those who want to get aboard the giant surfboard, Visit Huntington Beach will be picking three winners in their "Show Us Your Most Epic Wave" competition to help assist in the world record attempts. Surfers must create fun videos or photos and send them to the @surfcityusa Instagram account. Winners will be announced on Friday, June 5.
