The Bachelorette to Highlight Portugal’s Madeira Island in Opener
Destination & Tourism | May 23, 2013
Portugal’s Madeira Island will be the setting for the May 27 launch of ABC’s The Bachelorette's new season. It’s the second time, the reality show uses Portugal as scenery for a date. In the sixth season, the romantic ramparts of Castle of St. George, in Lisbon, and Sintra played host to the televised date. On the new season, the Bachelorette will highlight such Madeira settings as a stroll through gardens, tobogganing down the town's steep winding streets and a performance by a Fado singer. One scene shows the actors going up a winding road to the peak of Pico do Arieiro for a picnic and a fireworks display.
Madeira offers visitors a considerable variety of attractions from mountains, to seaside or city culture. Ernest Hemmingway described his toboggan wicker basket as the “most exhilarating experience” of his life. The island’s steep rise creates six separate climate zones, each with its own flora and fauna. SATA Airlines offers six-night packages from Boston Logan Airport to Funchal (via the Azores) with more flights to choose from and eight hotels.
