You may have seen the Taj Mahal when visiting India, but did you also stop at Karna Mata Temple-a place where rats are treated like royalty and feted with daily offerings of milk and fruit?
And in Berlin, most travelers make a point to visit the Berlin Wall, but did you know the wall can also be viewed in Los Angeles, Japan and Iceland?
These are just a few of the tips found in Lonely Planet's latest "Secret Marvels of the World," a book designed to reveal the world's overlooked, unusual and downright weird attractions.
Set to be released August 15, the book identifies 360 of Earth's most unexpected destinations. Compiled by a long list of contributors, it will surely have travelers second-guessing and revising their bucket lists.
According to a Today.com report, quirky and colorful U.S. options in the book include Nebraska's Carhenge, Salvation Mountain in California and Nine Mile Canyon in Utah. Also included are such places as the Cave of the Crystals in Chihuahua, Mexico-which is sometimes described as Superman's lair thanks to its larger than life display of crystals and Hawaii's rainbow colored Eucalyptus trees.

Additionally, the forthcoming book suggests visiting a ghost town in Namibia's Namib Desert and the mesmerizing Lake Kaindy in the Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan. Created by an earthquake in 1911, the lake sits more than 6500 feet above sea level yet drowned much of a forest, though the trees are still partially visible in the water.
The common thread throughout all the destinations and attractions in Secret Marvels of the World is that they're not likely to be found in other guidebooks. This is shaping up to be a must-read for travel fans the world over.
