They're Back! Whale Sharks Return to Cancun
They’re back! It’s May, which means the whale sharks have made their return to the waters off Cancun. “The return of the whale sharks signifies a special time in Cancun, when visitors from all over the world come to Cancun for a chance to swim with the largest fish in the world,” said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Companies that offer whale shark excursions include EcoColors Tours, which pioneered the concept 14 years ago; and Ceviche Tours, which operates out of nearby Isla Mujeres. Both companies follow strict guidelines to ensure the safety of travelers and whale sharks alike.
Excursions to swim with the whale sharks, which measure between 15 and 50 feet, are available through September.
Cancun will also host the 8th Annual Whale Shark Festival from July 18 to 24, which in addition to celebrating all things relating to the plankton-eating creatures, will also highlight the destination’s cultural attractions and cuisine. Proceeds from the festival, which is expected to attract approximately 5,000 visitors, will be donated to two marine conversation organizations, The Blue Realm Project and Amigos de Isla Contoy.
