New plans have been unveiled showing China’s intention to transform Pingtan Island in the Fujian Province into an international tourism destination, according to the Shanghai Daily.
“The plan was submitted by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Fujian government, according to the State Council’s website,” reports the paper.
In the report, it says that Pingtan should “develop its tourism development model, foster an industrial system pillared by tourism, promote cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan, while playing an active role in the Belt and Road initiative.”
Before plans to develop Pingtan were introduced, China’s central government approved plans to transform Hainan Island, the main island in its smallest province, Hainan, into a top tourist attraction by 2020. Currently, tourism on the island is booming with new hotels, planned golf resorts and plans to expand its medical tourism industry.
