United States Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is a cosponsor of a new proposal dubbed the “Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act” which would allow unrestricted travel to Cuba for Americans.

According to, Senator Casey announced Tuesday that he believes the recent changes in the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba are good, but the relationship needs to expand to include unrestricted travel to Cuba for U.S citizens.

Senator Casey went on to say that the U.S. government doesn’t restrict its citizens from visiting other countries with “repressive regimes and with horrific human rights records,” including Iran and North Korea.

The belief is that the expansion of unrestricted access for Americans will help Cuba’s entrepreneurial sector and bring attention to governance and human rights issues in the island nation. The hope is that the budding relationship will help end human rights abuses and a restrictive government.

“The U.S. government must not settle for words and promises, but demand action on human rights from the Castro regime,” Senator Casey said in a statement. “We must require the regime to follow through on its commitments, like allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations to conduct monitoring visits to the island.”

“Many Cubans and Cuban-Americans have suffered significantly at the hands of the Castro regime,” Senator Casey continued. “I have heard from many who are now cautiously optimistic, ready for the U.S. government to turn the page in this bilateral relationship. I believe allowing Americans to travel to Cuba, free of restrictions, is a prudent first step.”
