Washington DC Sets Several Tourism Records for 2015

On Wednesday, tourism group Destination DC released its latest figures that indicate Washington D.C. drew a record number of domestic and international visitors in 2015.

According to, the total number of travelers who visited the United States capital last year was a record-breaking 21.3 million, with 19.3 million of those people being domestic visitors—an increase of 5.3 percent from last year—and another two million arriving from other countries.

Overall, the 21.3 million visitors was a five percent increase over 2014, and the two million international travelers was an increase of 7.8 percent over 2014. In addition, travelers spent $7.1 billion in Washington D.C. last year, making it the first time the district ever surpassed $7 billion in a year.

“We’re really excited with the numbers,” Destination DC President and CEO Elliott Ferguson said in a statement. “Clearly the global community has taken notice of Washington as a destination. It generates economic development for the city. It’s really good for Washington as a whole.”

In terms of international visitors, China had the most tourists visit Washington D.C. with 300,000, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, France, India, South Korea, Brazil, Italy and Japan.
