Travelers planning a New Year's celebration in the Big Easy this year can expect a hefty bill to follow.
The allure of Bourbon Street on New Year's Eve is unquestionable, perhaps so much so that a recent TravelMag.com survey ranked New Orleans as the most expensive U.S. destination to spend the year-end holiday.
"With most New Orleans hotels being close to sold out for New Year's Eve, those that still have vacancies are attaching stipulations to them. More specifically, most such hotels are requiring that guests commit to staying at least two, or in some cases even three, nights," said TravelMag.com spokeswoman Barbara Adams.
Comparing 30 major U.S. destinations based on the cost of lodging for the night of Dec. 31, the rankings reflect the price for the cheapest available double room in a hotel with a minimum of three stars, while the rate of increase takes into account the price for the least expensive double room the week that follows (January 7-8, 2015).
With the most affordable qualifying room coming in at $359, New Orleans takes the crown.
Boasting by far the biggest rate increase of any of the destinations at 586 percent, Atlantic CIty ($350) is a close second place, while New York City ($345) and Miami Beach ($313) each top the $300-per-night mark.
Honolulu and Nashville are tied for fifth with the cheapest qualifying room costing $284 in both cities.
Denver ($269), Las Vegas ($249), Savannah, Georgia ($223) and Los Angeles ($209) round out the top 10.
L.A.'s 36 percent rate increase is the smallest of any destination in the top 10, while Indianapolis ($89) boasts the smallest rate of increase among the 30 ranked destinations at two percent.
