Spring is not all sunshine and fresh blooms. Sometimes, there’s rain. And that’s a good thing: “April showers bring May flowers,” or so the saying goes. So, if your plans get rained out when visiting NYC, these cozy lounges and lobbies are sure to salvage your stay.
The Bowery Hotel
This landmark captures the charm of old New York with antique chairs and sofas positioned next to a cozy fireplace. This is where you want to go with a good book for an afternoon — and maybe into the evening. Hot toddies or a Ginger Noggin are sure to keep you warm and relaxed.
In this historic hotel, the Ballroom used to serve as the Jane Street Theater and gave birth to the rock ‘n’ roll musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Now, it’s less grit and more grace, craftily reborn as a luxurious lobby with comfy chairs, an elaborate fireplace rescued from Belgium and unusual trinkets like a stuffed ram and an oversized disco ball.
The Ludlow Hotel
The Ludlow’s lobby lounge has been called the “living room” of the Lower East Side. Surrounded by the glow from the limestone fireplace, vintage furniture, Moroccan rugs and oversize chandeliers, it’s a nice spot to find yourself with a drink and one hand and a great book in the other. There is a provocative cocktail menu and a full range of food from Dirty French, conveniently one of Manhattan’s hottest restaurants at the moment.
The Pod Hotel
This hotel features an entire room devoted to what adults want most in life — a place to kick back, work, read, play some games and cozy up next to a roaring fire. The Playroom & Bar at the Pod Hotel has Ping-Pong, communal tables for a chat with friends or a round of Battleship, comfy couches for reading a book or tables that can be used as temporary workspaces. And, when it's not raining, this hotel is home to an awesome rooftop bar.
The Roxy Hotel
Visiting the city when it rains? You don’t have to find a friend’s living room to cozy up in. You can just give the living room-like lounge area at the Roxy Hotel a try. It was just recently renovated and can serve as your surrogate cozy space to avoid the wet weather. Floor-to-ceiling windows, velvet-covered couches and an elegant setting provide the perfect respite from a dreary day. The Roxy Lounge offers a full menu throughout the day and Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee, serving organic, fair trade coffee and baked goods, will open this spring.
Winnie’s Jazz Bar
Winnie’s Jazz Bar is located in the lobby of the Refinery Hotel and is the perfect place to spend an afternoon in vintage flair. A classy list of handcrafted cocktails harkens back to the Prohibition Era. The building was once a bustling tea salon in the early 1900s and is an ideal spot for a cozy afternoon drink.
