New York reigns supreme when it comes to the strongest city brand in the U.S.
Resonance Consultancy recently released its 2016 U.S. Place Equity Index, ranking the top 100 U.S. city brands based on six key factors, including place, product, programming, people, prosperity and promotion.
In addition to analyzing statistics like population figures and income levels, the Resonance report takes into account millions of social media ratings from websites including TripAdvisor and Yelp. "This makes the Place Equity Index a unique measure that combines both core statistics with qualitative rankings produced by locals and visitors themselves," said President Chris Fair in an emailed letter.
After New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and San Diego round out the top five strongest U.S. city brands, followed by Boston, Houston, Miami, Washington, D.C. and Seattle.
Irvine, California, which ranked second in prosperity and people, just missed out on the top 10, finishing 11th overall.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, New York ran away with the top spot, finishing tops in four of the six aspects analyzed and achieving top 10 status in all six.
Miami ranked first in prosperity, or employment, income, poverty and corporate head offices, while 19th-ranked Plano, Texas finished tops in people, defined as the educational attainment, immigration and diversity of a community.
Despite ranking third in place — which is defined as the perceived quality of a city's natural and built environment — Honolulu came in 18th overall. Meanwhile, Charleston, South Carolina, which finished fourth in place just behind the Hawaiian capital, fell to 48th overall because of poor prosperity and promotion rankings.
Promotion examines the quantity of articles, references and recommendations for a city online.
