While most consider San Diego to be a summer destination, the California hot spot should be No. 1 on traveling families' lists this fall.

That's because kids visiting San Diego with an adult can experience almost anything and everything free in the month of October.

From Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, the city offers hundreds of deals for kids. In addition to popular tourist attractions and activities, traveling families can benefit from special month-long deals on accommodations and transportation.

For example, kids can ride Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner to San Diego for free alongside a paying adult, while kids ages 12 and under staying at San Diego's Doubletree by Hilton Golf Resort can enjoy a free breakfast buffet with an adult purchase.

The Arizona Republic's Dawn Gilbertson points out that the age ranges for free admission vary from place to place, but considers nine to be the most common cutoff.

So for travelers accompanied by young children, the annual promotion is ideal, especially considering kids receive free entry to San Diego's premier attractions, including the San Diego Zoo, nearby Legoland and SeaWorld.

Plus, families will find additional savings at museums, on tours and even local cruises.

Free surf lessons, gondola cruises and helicopter rides are among the most unique offerings next month.

In addition to the city's plethora of attractions and activities, San Diego boasts stellar weather year-round, meaning families can also experience beautiful beaches and outdoor attractions.
