We imagine that right about now many of you consider snow shovels among the items you’d least like to see. However, there is a race that might interest you, one that takes snow shovels and turns them into a reason to have an absolute blast in the snow.
We are referring to the 2016 World Championship Shovel Races, presented by Lowe’s Valley Market and taking place at Angel Fire Resort, which is nestled comfortably in the southern Rockies of New Mexico.
The best part is that anyone can join, which pretty much means anyone can slide on down the hill to claim the prize of world champion. The term will come in handy when boasting with friends about your winter exploits.

For the uninitiated, shovel racing is pretty much what it sounds like: you sit on a shovel with the handle pointed down the hill.
Actually, take a look at this video from last year and you see instantly how much fun is to be had with a conveyance normally relegated to chores.
According to the press release, a practice session will he held on Feb. 5 with the competition taking place the next day, Feb. 6.
Anyone can enter into a number of age specific groups. The youngest are the Little Scoops (ages 6-9) and the eldest are the Master Men (45 and over).
Mike Hess, CMO of Angel Fire Resort expounded on the frivolity: “What other sport can you show up and become a World Champion the first time you race? We are one of only a handful of resorts world-wide where they offer Shovel Racing as a competitive sport. We are opening registration to anyone who would like to try and compete. It’s a great event to participate in or come out and cheer them on as a spectator.”
If this sounds like something you would be interested in, and it’s understandable considering the video, check out the link to the event’s website.

Prices vary and top off at the Saturday on-site registration for Pro Adults, which will run you $65.
However, you can pre-register, which garners a free shirt, for $15 for Little Scoops and up to $35 for Adults not entering the Pro division.
But if you are fast enough down the hill then you might just take one of many cash prizes awarded each of the age groups.
If not, you get something rather rare at this point in the winter. You get to look down at a snow shovel and actually smile from the possibilities.
