We're off to the see the wizard…in various forms and locations around the country.
Happy birthday to an iconic film that still resonates with fans young and old. Of course, we are referring to The Wizard of Oz, which turns 75 on Monday, August 25.
To celebrate we thought we would toss out some of the immersive ways you might enjoy the film's legacy-outside sitting down and singing along to yet another showing, of course.
Egghead's Restaurant (Fort Bragg, Calif.) - Oh, yes. There is indeed a restaurant dedicated to good-witch service and munchkin munchies. From a delightful yellow-brick entry to a sinister dish called Dorothy's Revenge, this diner has it all-minus a somnambulant trip through a poppy field.
Coronado, Calif. - As millions already know, visiting Coronado can be a great time, featuring beautiful sights and enticing activities. However, there is certainly something for Oz fans.
L. Frank Baum-author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, from which the movie was adapted-lived in Coronado. As San Diego Family reminds, there is plenty to interest fans of his work. The house he wrote various books in still stands, and there is even an art exhibit at the Coronado Public Library.
Of course, the greatest treat my be a jaunt to the lavish Hotel del Coronado, which features the Crown Room, featuring, "four spectacular crown-shaped chandeliers designed by Baum."
What's more, visitors can enjoy one more Sunday in August at the Oz-themed Yappy House. NBC San Diego's Monica Garske writes, "For instance, every Sunday during the month of August the Hotel Del Coronado will host "Yappy House," a free happy hour gathering for animal and Oz enthusiasts." Garske continues, "While owners enjoy themed cocktails like the 'Ruby Slipper,' dogs can lap up free Evian water and organic "yappetizer" treats."
The Great Movie Ride - What do you get when you mix Disney's It's a Small World ride with a beloved classic? Well, this:
That's a snapshot of the Wizard of Oz portion of The Great Movie Ride at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios.
Beech Mountain, N.C. - There remains an Oz theme park of sorts. Back in 2013, The Huffington Post reported on the ill-fated Emerald City in Beech Mountain, which succumbed to a fire in 1976 and subsequent attendance issues. However, visitors can enjoy the destination once a year at the Autumn at Oz celebration.
This year is no different and will take place this Oct. 4 and 5, allowing guests to take a, "tour of Auntie Em's and Uncle Henry's farm and meet Dorothy and friends along the Yellow Brick Road."
Chittenango, N.Y. - Lastly, the birthplace of Baum has an extensive collection at the All Things Oz Museum, featured on Facebook here.
From the looks of it, you can take a picture in front of the Emerald City without all the hard work of taking down a nefarious witch.
Now if the Hollywood classic taught us anything, it's that it's important to walk out the door and follow that road on down to the end, because a lifetime of adventures awaits the joyful journeyman. However, remember to take the yellow-brick road. Only suckers take that awful red-bricked road.
