The best kind of April Fools’ prank is the kind that isn’t a prank at all.

Mashable and Kotaku direct our attentions to one of the more popular navigation tools on the Internet, Google Maps.

As of March 31, you could play a rousing game of Pac-Man in your browser while ignoring the directions that caused you to go to Google Maps in the first place.

Hours will have been wasted, which we assume is the joke.

Mashable’s Neha Prakash writes, “As part of its barrage of April Fools' pranks, Google Maps has created a hack that lets users turn any city into the pixelated, classic arcade game, complete with multi-colored ghosts and iconic music.”

While many of you are pulling pranks and generally turning friends into enemies, the good people over at Google are putting together the kind of frivolity the day was made for.

We assume the game will be playable throughout April 1, when nobody is safe and it’s best to stay in and away from tricksters anyway.

So consider hunkering down in your safe haven and playing hours of Pac-Man for free. It saves the embarrassment/anger of when some amateur comedian decides the best way to prank someone is to inflict as much emotional harm as possible.

Indeed, it’s best to just navigate the world with this fine yellow ball with a mouth.
