Have the Time of Your Life at One of These 'Dirty Dancing' Destinations
Diehard “Dirty Dancing” fans might think the movie is perfect the way it is, but the execs at ABC see it a little differently. Late last year, the network announced it would be producing a remake of the 1987 flick that still has fans jumping through the air and warning "nobody puts Baby in a corner!”
The updated version stars Abigail Breslin as Baby, a role currently synonymous with Jennifer Grey, Colt Prattes in Patrick Swayze's iconic role of Johnny, Sarah Hyland as Baby's sister, Lisa, and Debra Messing as their mom, Marjorie Houseman. The movie is in production now and will air sometime this fall.
The good news is, whether you're Team DD1987 or you're ready to jump onto Team DD2016, you can have the time of your life at one of these old school resorts.
The remake is filming now at the Kanuga Conference Center in Henderson, North Carolina. The 1,400-acre grounds, scenic lake and guest camps make Kanuga the perfect backdrop for the TV movie, which will still be set at Kellerman's Resort.
In a press release about the shoot, the conference center said its "historic and scenic setting suits the production perfectly — over the years more than a few comparisons have been made between Kanuga and the original film’s setting. We’re honored to be a part of another production that showcases the beauty of Western North Carolina.”
Each summer, Kanuga welcomes families to stay on their grounds and enjoy daily activities, reminiscent of those The Housemans enjoyed in the Catskills. But, don't expect too much dirty dancing at this resort since most of the action is geared toward Christian interests. To find out about Kanuga's Guest Period, visit kanuga.org.
Kanuga is also just 20 miles from Lake Lure, NC which had a small role in the first “Dirty Dancing” movie and still celebrates it every year. The annual “Dirty Dancing” Festival will take place August 19-20, 2016. Fans learn all of their favorite dances from the movie and perform them during the two-day extravaganza.
The best part? Proceeds from the $22 tickets go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Tickets go on sale in May and can be purchased at dirtydancingfestival.com.
If you really want to immerse yourself in all things “Dirty Dancing” 87, head to the Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia. The retro resort played Kellerman's in the original and still attracts fans who congregate for “Dirty Dancing” Weekends throughout the summer. The special packages include dance lessons, dance parties, dinner in the ballroom and a screening of the movie.
This year's “Dirty Dancing” Weekends will take place on June 24-26, July 29-31 and Aug. 26-28. The "Dirty Dancing" Package can be booked at mtnlakelodge.com. With summer right around the corner, there's no time like the present to polish off those dancing shoes and get ready to mambo the night away at one of these “Dirty Dancing” destinations.
