The answer for what to do with a defunct Kentucky mine seems to be making an underground bike park out of it.
The Louisville Courier-Journal's Kirby Adams (h/t NPR) reports on a bit of bike riding you can enjoy about 100 feet below the ground, which has already garnered enormous buzz.
In fact, the park, called Mega Cavern, sold out in its first day on Monday. Although, it should be noted that it was a soft opening meant to test the confines of a raucous cavern.
Co-owner Jim Lowry spoke with Kirby and stated, "We kept the number of riders to 100 for our first day to allow us to work out any kinks."
For a glimpse of the mammoth underground park, you can look no further than this gem from YouTube:
Now the video doesn't illustrate the enormous size of the park, which can accommodate 500 riders on a reported 12 miles of trails.
Those interested, and we are sure there are more than a few, can get information at Mega Cavern's official website.
There you instantly realize that there is more underground fun to be had aside from bike riding.
The park, which used to be a limestone mine, also boasts zip-line adventures and tram tours throughout the cavernous theme park.
As for the largest indoor bike park in the world, the website offers, "Over 320,000 square feet including over 45 trails, Jump Lines, Pump Tracks, Dual Slalom, BMX, Cross Country and Single Track all in a former limestone cavern 100 feet sub-surface. Enjoy the comfort of our 60 degree temperature year round."
As for pricing, a four-hour romp through the mine will cost $24 with eight hours of fun running visitors $40. Also, mountain bike and helmet rentals will make their way into the fold sometime in the near future.
Until then, you will need to bring your own helmet if you want to enjoy a rare bike ride underground where the weather is always dry.
