Normally the safety video at the start of any flight is a good opportunity to zone out. When it comes to Air New Zealand’s flights, however, they remain entertainment you don’t want to miss.

The airline released its latest romp around the world, which also serves as a safety video that reminds you to once again stay buckled when seated and cease with your archaic practice of smoking.

But instead of delivering the usual mandates with excruciating tedium, it enlivens the start of the holiday with a vibrant video featuring some of the best surfers to ever grace the world’s famed waters.

So get situated, stow away your carry-on luggage and prepare for a Safety Safari:

As you can see above, the video is filled with big-name surfers who are used to taking on equally grandiose waves: Gabriel Medina, Mick Fanning, Ricardo Christie, Paige Hareb, Masatoshi Ohno, Alana Blanchard, Anastasia Ashley and even Laird Hamilton feature in the captivating video.

From featuring Bear Grylls to characters of Middle Earth, the airline is renowned for infusing creativity and intrigue into what is normally the first moment a passenger checks out mentally.

And that’s a shame, because the safety demonstration remains an important part of any itinerary. It’s just that we have all heard the roll call so often we could probably recite it ourselves.

Thankfully, Air New Zealand manages to yet again provide a video that we don’t mind watching intently.

In this case, the short video covers three destinations in the form of America’s Malibu, Australia’s Gold Coast and Raglan and Piha in New Zealand.

Hamilton offered his thoughts on the destinations featured, via a press release: “New Zealand has some incredible surf spots that are right up there with the best in the world and I hope my time on the waves at Raglan inspires those thousands of surfers around the world who have dreamed of heading down under to pack up their boards and do a road trip around the country. New Zealand is an amazing place with some of the friendliest people in the world and so much to do and experience, both on and off the water.”

And Medina chimed in with exuberant praise for the airline: “Surfing is bigger than ever globally and I am keen to do all I can to interest more people in the sport. Air New Zealand operates to some of the most amazing surf destinations around the world. It has been terrific to showcase a handful of these with some of the greatest surfers of all time. It’s been an epic experience.”

Rather than tune out the moment we sit down on a flight, we would much rather prefer to get lost in a daydream of the trip at hand.

Air New Zealand once again aids that venture with a gorgeous video that just so happens to be a list of helpful safety instructions.
