Patriot Floorless Roller Coaster to Open at California's Great America in 2017

On Thursday, California's Great America amusement park announced that it will open the facility’s first floorless roller coaster for the 2017 season called “Patriot.”

Patriot will take the place of soon-to-be-retired Vortex coaster, and will measure 91-feet high, feature a 360-degree loop and reach top speeds of 45 miles per hour. The name of the attraction is based off the fact that it’s adjacent to the All American Corners section of the theme park.

The Vortex was a stand-up coaster, and to make the successful transition to a floorless ride, the park will replace the existing trains with cars that position riders so their feet will dangle as they ride along the track.

The Vortex will close officially on Sept. 5, and work will begin on the transition to the Patriot.

California's Great America provided artist renderings of the revamped roller coaster:

“With the track visible beneath their feet, Patriot will create unique and exciting new perspectives throughout the ride,” California's Great America vice president Raul Rehnborg said in a statement.
