Port Lincoln, Australia, was in for a glowing good time on Sunday night. Bioluminescent algae washed up on the shores of Proper Bay, and residents took full advantage of the dramatic effects.
Glowing footprints, sparkling splashes and luminated shallows put on a spectacular display.
"This was like someone had bought hundreds of glow sticks and opened them all at once," Proper Bay resident Therese Pedler told Adelaide Now.
Just putting your hand in the water or walking along the shore provided a dramatic effect.

The algae appears to lie dormant until disturbed, but it glows a beautiful blue once the water is agitated.
Australia wasn't the only place in the world where this phenomenon was occurring. This week, you could also find a similar blue glow in Swansea, Wales.

"I had to pinch myself this morning," photographer Alyn Wallace said on his Facebook page. "Last night, I meandered through dark woodlands and waded across a crab infested estuary to get to this spot where bioluminescent plankton were lighting up the shores. Every step and splash I made just lit up with an unreal blue glow."
Leave it to Los Angeles to perfect the use of bioluminescent effects. Night Life LA (02) will assemble bioluminescent algae on the sand south of Marina Del Rey between Dockweiler Beach and Torrance on June 24. In true L.A. style, the surreal scene will be filled with artists and performers.
