Timelapse, hyperlapse, flow motion: Whatever you call the recent flood of city-centric videos, they allow us to travel to places without ever packing our bags. The following uses technology that surpasses even the most vivid video, offering truly stunning clarity and detail.
Io9's Robbie Gonzalez reports on a video shot in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that offers 10K clarity.
Of course, you will be watching on a sub-10K device, but that's not necessarily an issue when trying to grasp the possibilities.
As you will soon see, already brilliant images take on added weight the minute you zoom in-all without missing much in the way of quality:
And as a bonus, we get a fantastic glimpse of Rio through the lens of photographer Joe Capra, who captured these images.
The video was initially posted to Vimeo by Scientifantastic to demonstrate the power of the PhaseOne IQ180 camera.
For those who don't fall into the camera geek demographic, what we get is a quick demonstration of where image quality and size is headed.
The description states: "This footage comes from some shots I did while shooting 4K and 8K timelapses in Rio De Janeiro for a major electronics manufacturer. Each shot is comprised of hundreds (of) individual still images, each weighing in at a whopping 80 megapixels. Each individual raw frame measures 10328x7760 pixels."
In other words, a snapshot photo contains far more detail than the mosaic of multi-colored houses or tiny boats floating on the bay.
If you push in on the image, you find there is a vibrant world bustling about, which has us all entranced.
