Nerds, geeks and people dressed up in cosplay will continue to fill San Diego for the summer—at least through 2018.

Variety’s Stuart Oldham delivers tremendous news for the city just ahead of the 2015 Comic-Con festivities next week.

According to the report, convention officials have agreed to bring the wonderful world of geekdom for a few more years, maintaining the kind of monetary infusion that comes in tandem with the celebration of comic books, movies, TV and just about every corner of pop culture you can think of.

Oldham notes that Los Angeles and Anaheim have recently been considered as possible locations for future Comic-Con events.

As anyone who has visited Comic-Con will tell you, the event has seen a dramatic rise in attendees over the years, garnering a crush of fans clamoring for memorabilia, news items on upcoming fare and various events around the convention center.

ABC 10’s Marie Coronel reports on those concerns:

Coronel explains, “One, they were able to get the additional meeting room space outside of the convention center. And two, they were able to reserve rooms for the attendees.”

NBC San Diego quotes Mayor Kevin Faulconer who is optimistic the beloved event will stay beyond the current agreement: “We will be expanding our convention center. We're going to continue to grow and Comic-Con is going to continue to grow with us in San Diego.”

The decision is a momentous one for the tourist industry in the area. As NBC San Diego reports, Comic-Con brings a tremendous amount of business to the area for the week.

The report cites city officials that offer more than 130,000 attendees bring a whopping $180 million to the area.

Thousands are preparing to descend upon San Diego for an event that starts with a preview night on July 8 and the official start taking place the next day.

That is when myriad costumed individuals will queue up for panels, dine at various restaurants and drink at a variety of bars.

Frivolity comes bearing gifts in the form of bountiful cash. For the foreseeable future, that will remain the joy of San Diego.
