Even if you're just coming off a long summer vacation, fall is still a great time to get away.

For travelers eyeing a domestic trip this autumn, now is the time to explore one of America's many best kept secrets.

So if a fall getaway is in your plans, consider one of these three underrated destinations.

Louisville, Kentucky

There's much more to Louisville than the world's greatest boxer and world-class bourbon. And the city is especially alluring in the fall when it plays host to a handful of events and festivals, including October's Jack O'Lantern Spectacular.

For several weeks in October, visitors can check out 5,000 professionally carved Jack O'Lanterns along a one-quarter-mile trail. This year's event in Iroquois Park kicks off Oct. 13 and continues through Nov. 6.

But if you find yourself struggling to get into the Halloween spirit, there are plenty of other attractions worth investigating, including the Louisville Mega Cavern, the Kentucky Derby Museum and the Muhammad Ali Center.

Portland, Maine

Whether you can't get enough fall colors or want to experience one of America's premier autumn festivals, Portland, Maine, is a fantastic fall destination.

If you're planning an October visit, be sure to check out Harvest on the Harbor, Maine's Food & Wine Festival. The annual festival celebrates the best in food, beer, wine and spirits from the state as well as from around the world and will take place from Oct. 20-23 this year.

The Freeport Fall Festival in nearby Freeport, Maine is another reason to explore Portland in the fall. The 18th annual celebration of art, music and food will take place during the first week of October.

Travelers passionate about art will want to stop by the Portland Museum of Art, while the best views in town can be found at the Portland Observatory. Craft beer fans can't leave before enjoying a free tasting at Allagash Brewery.

Savannah, Georgia

Halloween fans will want to move Savannah, Georgia to the top of their bucket list.

As the oldest city in Georgia, Savannah is home to a plethora of allegedly haunted attractions, including haunted hotels. Choose from any one of the city's haunted locations or spice things up with a haunted pub crawl with Moon River Brewing Company.

Definitely pay a visit to Savannah's Historic District, and, if you're brave enough, check out Bonaventure Cemetery.
