Autumn is the season of Halloween. And while there's no shortage of haunted attractions popping up all across America, there are a handful of museums that stand out this time of year.

For travelers who love to be scared, here are four of the creepiest museums in the U.S.

The Warren's Occult Museum

Where: Monroe, Connecticut

If you saw "The Conjuring" and it raised the hair on the back of your neck, then you'll want to pay a visit to The Warren's Occult Museum in Connecticut.

Located in the basement of Ed and Lorraine Warren's Monroe home, this museum features a massive collection of items that the Warrens accumulated over the years. And the pair is said to have investigated more than 10,000 hauntings.

The infamous Annabelle Doll is one of many frightening exhibits on display and the Shadow Doll is another must-see item.

National Museum of Funeral History

Where: Houston, Texas

Perhaps one of the most bizarre museums in America, Houston's National Museum of Funeral History is the ideal combination of education and spookiness.

Here, visitors will not only learn about the history of honoring the dead, but will also be able to view celebrity funeral items and historic coffins and hearses, among other items. If you're looking to get into the Halloween spirit without getting too freaked out, look no further.

Vent Haven Museum

Where: Fort Mitchell, Kentucky

Boasting more than 800 figures, most of which are terrifying, this ventriloquism museum is sure to give you goosebumps.

While meant to preserve the vast collection of founder W.S. Berger, this museum can't help but creep out some visitors, considering some of the items housed here date back as far as the 1700s.

Welcoming just over 1,000 visitors annually, you won't have to worry about waiting in long lines at this overlooked museum. But hurry, because it's only open from May through September.

Mutter Museum

Where: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is known for many things, including a laundry list of top-flight museums. However, none are more chilling or disturbing than the Mutter Museum, a medical museum that's home to countless medical oddities, among them a nine-foot-long human colon.

The museum also boasts wax models and antique medical tools, including a Civil War amputation kit.

Let's just say it's not for the squeamish.
