Ocean City, Maryland, is among the top summer vacation destinations in the U.S., and rightfully so. After all, it was recently ranked as the 12th-best beach in America for 2016 by Business Insider.

But while the Mid-Atlantic resort town boasts one of the world's best beaches, a renowned Boardwalk and endless attractions and nightlife, it's also home to some hidden gems.

Here are four underrated things to do in Ocean City.

Paddle Board Assawoman Bay

Few activities are as relaxing as paddle boarding. So head over to 48th Street WaterSports or Odyssea Watersports two blocks north to rent a paddle board. You shouldn't have too much trouble staying upright on Assawoman Bay (yay, no waves) and if you time your journey right, you're likely to catch an amazing sunset over the bay.

If paddle boarding is too slow or isolated for you, you can always rent a jet ski or pontoon boat to take out on the bay.

Explore the Craft Beer Scene

The craft beer scene in Ocean City is exploding and has something to offer every visitor regardless of whether they're a craft brew rookie or veteran.

Begin your tour on 10th street and the Boardwalk at Backshore Brewing Company before heading north up Coastal Highway. Be sure to try the award-winning "Transporter" from Assawoman Bay Brewing Company at the 45th Street Taphouse (pictured above) and don't head home until you sample a "Nuckin' Futs" from Ocean City Brewing Company on 56th Street.

Brewery tours are available daily and there's no shortage of souvenirs to choose from, including growler fills and cases of local brews.

People Watch on the Boardwalk

People watching is perhaps the simplest vacation activity there is. After all, it requires minimal effort, it's free and you can do it almost anywhere.

But you haven't properly people watched until you've observed your fellow vacationers along the Ocean City Boardwalk. Whether you're strolling the boards, relaxing on a bench or grabbing a bite to eat outside at one of the many restaurants, you're certain to see something interesting.

For arguably the best people watching experience in Ocean City, travelers should request an outdoor table at Shenanigan's Irish Pub and Grille on 4th Street and the Boardwalk. Here, you'll find some of the best food in town and, more importantly, be right in the center of the action.

Camp at Frontier Town

Frontier Town boasts a water park and a theme park as well as a new High Ropes Adventure Park featuring more than 1,200 feet of zip lines.

If you've got an RV or a tent, camping outside of Ocean City is a great way to save on accommodation costs, meaning you'll have more money to spend on food and entertainment.
