June 21 marks World Giraffe Day, celebrated annually by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The day, which is the longest day or night of the year, depending on your hemisphere, is the perfect time to honor these long-necked creatures. Several zoos, schools, NGOs, governments and institutions around the world host events to raise awareness and support for the giraffe in the wild.

Here are a few fun places to see and interact with giraffes in honor of their national day.

See Giraffes on Safari

Take a safari with Africa Picture Safari to Onkoshi Camp in Etosha National Park. The small, intimate camp accommodates just 30 guests, ensuring a personal experience for all who visit. Spectacular sunsets and amazing wildlife activities combine for an ideal safari. See giraffes on guided morning, afternoon and evening game drives, take guided moonlit walks and gain exclusive access to parts of the national park.

Visit Giraffe Manor

For an up-close visit with the endangered Rothschild giraffe, head to Giraffe Manor. Part of the Safari Collection, the boutique hotel in the Langata suburb of Nairobi is set on 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest. It is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings and is home to its own herd of Rothschild giraffes who visit in the morning and the evening, poking their necks into the windows looking for a treat.

Head to Giraffe Ranch

You don’t have to travel all the way to Africa to get up close with a giraffe. At the Giraffe Ranch in Dade City, Fla., visitors can experience the lives of giraffes firsthand, as well as several other species from around the world who live under the huge oaks and on the open grasslands of the park, mimicking their native African surroundings. The working ranch specializes in exotic species and provides visitors with tours of the property via four-wheel-drive vehicles, camel-back safaris or by Segway. There is also the opportunity to take a llama trek through the ranch.

Feed a Giraffe

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore offers visitors the chance to feed giraffes through its Animal Experiences program. The feeding station is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can purchase an acacia branch and feed it to the giraffe. There is also a small gift shop with giraffe and elephant souvenirs, to visit also.
