April Travel Insurance Official Touts Difference-Making Policies
April Travel Protection is seeking to woo leisure travelers and travel professionals by spotlighting not necessarily what the company does, but what other travel insurance firms don’t do.
For example, while most travel insurance providers maintain 24-hour, toll-free phone numbers for clients to coordinate assistance and services, April claims to be the first travel insurance company to utilize Skype, text messaging and other mobile communications channels in addition to maintaining toll-free numbers in most destinations.
“The travel industry as a whole has placed a lot of emphasis on marketing to consumers via multiple channels, but is still lagging behind other industries in terms of support channels,” said Jason Schreier, April’s chief executive.
“In the travel insurance sector specifically, there is a common perception among U.S. consumers that their insurance company would rather not hear from them once their premium is paid,” Schreier. “We welcome our policy holders to connect with us and strive to make it as easy as possible.”
Additionally, claims under April’s “Stress Less Benefits” program are paid immediately, Schreier said, avoiding the long claims process typical of most firms. Schreier says April is the only travel insurance firm to offer immediate payments.
Schreier is also rare among travel insurance providers in his willingness to address perceptions among many consumers that insurance companies are often reluctant to pay clients’ legitimate claims.
“Countering Americans’ deep-rooted mistrust of insurance companies is no easy task, but being readily available on the other end of that phone, iPad or whatever device our policyholders are able to use is an important start,” he said. “We know even a minor inconvenience can ruin one’s trip if it’s not resolved immediately.”
April’s Stress Less policies are designed to address travel hazards ranging from baggage delays to emergency medical coverage. Travelers can also purchase April plans that provide 100 percent reimbursement of trip costs for situations including injury, sickness, death, job loss or relocation, supplier default, weather, natural disasters, terrorism, military duty and strikes. April policies are available that provide trip interruption coverage of up to 150 percent of trip cost.
