Looking to get the creative juices flowing? You might need to book a vacation — and the more exotic the better.
A report in the Huffington Post says that people may need what’s referred to as a “disorienting dilemma” to “have their paradigm shattered and expanded.”
According to Transformational Learning Theory, doing this will force you to rethink your life, goals, values and more.
“These experiences generally occur in novel environments while having new experiences far outside your routines, beliefs, norms, roles, and traditional way of doing things. They can be uncomfortable, anxiety-provoking and totally disruptive,” writes Benjamin P. Hardy.
This sounds like the foundations of what drives adventure travelers. If you have ever traveled outside your comfort zone, maybe you felt more creative or more open to new ideas afterward.
“A disorienting dilemma initiates a process of re-evaluating yourself. It allows you to explore new ways of thinking. Moreover, it creates the possibility of a personal “clean slate,” allowing you to reshape your identity and your future,” Hardy says.

Not opening yourself up in this way can also have detrimental effects.
“Without these experiences, you will live in a silo. Your worldview will be narrow. And thus, you won’t have an open and relevant view of the world,” Hardy says.
