If you ask me, the best French fries are found at the Northwestern Steamship Company in Auckland, New Zealand. Thesepommesfrites are perfectly crisped, shoestring sliced and come with a dollop of garlic aioli on the side. On a wet, rainy day in Auckland, I have spent many a day cozying up to this dish as a main midday meal.

Seeing as National French Fry Day is known around the world, I am seemingly not alone in this endeavor. The French Fry has traveled the world and many have traveled in search of the perfect fry. Where that is found depends on what style you prefer.

Many rave about "street fries" in European cities such as Amsterdam, where they are served in a paper cone and slathered with a patron's preference of sauces.

Wise Instagrammer @nanachronicle notes "one does not simply leave Amsterdam without having any fries."

Right you are.

Beyond the classic French fry, there's the evolved frite. A fine example-and one worthy of sampling on National French Fry Day- is the truffle fry, perfect for the indulgent French fry addict. (Yes, we do understand that the "truffle" oil is not legit but, still, the taste is oh so good.)

Who has mastered the gluttonous art that is the truffle fry? Singapore's Redpan boasts a heavy presence in the foodie world. Theirs are called "Truffle Floss Fries," shoestring fries smothered in truffle aioli, chives and chicken floss. Yum.

Canada, however, has really taken the French fry to a great height. There is just something so tasty-and comforting-about crispy potatoes smothered in gravy and cheese curds.

These days, many shops have moved beyond the traditional offering. There are so many different variations of the dish that foodies are bombarded with options as demonstrated by Instagrammer @poutine_fiend, who found that connoisseurs can even combine the smothered fry in one crazy looking dish.

While exotic new varieties are likely to continue to spring up as poutine continues its world French fry domination, there's something to be said for trying out the original, as God (or poutine) intended: French fries covered in gravy with cheese curd, fresh from the plastic bag, steeped in whey and "squeaky as a mouse."
