HuffPost blogger Justin Francis, founder of Responsible Travel, talks about the power of responsible tourism in overcoming xenophobia.

In his most recent blog, Francis talks about how responsible tourism is undertaken with the idea of bringing strangers together.

“What excites me about responsible tourism is that it brings people together in a fair and respectful way,” wrote Francis. “Through responsible tourism we have the power to create positive, optimistic opportunities to counter a growing climate of mistrust around the world.”

While issues such as Brexit and an upswing in populism in politics makes it hard to believe that tolerance toward others is a priority, consumer interest, especially in travel, tells a different story.

“Over the last few years there has been a real shift in consumer interest towards brands with a clearer social purpose and we believe that tourism will be the next industry to follow this trend,” noted Francis on HuffPost. “We know the demand is there - since the start of 2015 Responsible Travel has grown 30 percent - the fastest growth we’ve seen in our 15 year history. We’re not sharing this to boast; instead we hope to influence the rest of the tourism industry that a more caring form of tourism can be very commercially successful.”
