Everything is better with bacon and today, International Bacon Day, lovers of the pork treat can celebrate their addiction with pride.
International Bacon Day isn’t a real holiday, but don’t tell the bacon lovers that. It’s really an unofficial holiday, but it has been observed for the last seven years on the Saturday before Labor Day. So, if you can’t get enough of the salty treasure in your meals, as a chocolate-covered dessert, around a big slab of meat, or on the side of your morning eggs, then you definitely want to put some of these bacon festivals on your travel plans this year and next:
San Diego Bacon Fest: Self-proclaimed as the “Original International Bacon Day Celebration,” the San Diego Bacon Fest is a popular event, so take a last minute trip to San Diego and be there in time. This Saturday’s event takes place at Preble Field at NTC Park and the four-hour event includes unlimited food and beverage samples (unlimited really is a bacon lover’s favorite word).
The Great Big Bacon Picnic: Later in the month, on the other side of the country, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is The Great Big Bacon Picnic. This indoor/outdoor event will be held at The Old Pfizer Factory on Sept. 24-25 and features unlimited bacon and booze from over 100 chefs, brew masters, and craft distillers in the NYC area.
Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival: February is all about things you love, so if you don’t celebrate this month, it’s not too late to enjoy your love of bacon at the annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival, Feb. 18, 2017 in Des Moines, Iowa. The event attracts more than 14,000 bacon-lovers from all over the world.
Bacon Bash: This two-day festival on Sept. 17 and 18 in River Falls, Wisconsin celebrates all things bacon, and has pig-themed activities, live music, merchandise from local artists, bacon vendors and more. Come out and sample bacon-inspired dishes from local restaurants and food vendors. Then cast your vote for the People’s Choice Winner! Vendors will be showcasing their products including specialty sauces, ice cream, arts, crafts and novelty items.
Bacon Bash Texas: It’s go big or go home in Texas and you won’t leave this event, where it’s eating bacon, listening to bands and enjoying some brew, all while benefiting a good cause. The event takes place on October 15 and provides funding for local charities.
PA Bacon Fest: Located in historic Easton, the PA Bacon Fest has 100+ vendors, 20+ musical acts, and several stages. The two-day festival, which takes place on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6, attracts more than 50,000 attendees and includes bacon chef battles, culinary demos, hog heaven cupcake competition, bacon cocktail competition, pig roast, pig racing, hog calling, non-stop live music, kids’ events and more.
Reykjavik Bacon Festival: This is international bacon day, so consider hopping a flight to Iceland for next year’s annual Reykjavík Bacon Festival, which takes place every August. This festival includes music, competitions, bacon recipes and tastings and, after all it’s Iceland!
